Fleet Safety
Vehicle operation is identified as a significant risk and a high priority for global improvement. Pfizer has approximately 38,000 vehicles worldwide, including Wyeth. Pfizer's fleet covers over 825 million miles per year, which means our drivers drive two to three times more than an average person.
Vehicle accidents represent the greatest risk to our sales force. Tragically, Pfizer has lost five colleagues in work-related deaths in the last three years due to work-related crashes — including two in Russia in July 2009 and one in the U.S. in November 2009. This underscores the need to improve safety.
In 2008-09, the U.S. Fleet Safety program has shown a 49-percent reduction in collisions. This program, supported by a Global Fleet Safety Standard, focuses on increasing safety awareness and accountability — an effort to influence behavior behind the wheel. The emphasis is on reducing risk to our colleagues and those with whom we share the road. We want everyone returning home safely.
Our Global Fleet Safety Standard has five elements:
- Senior management commitment with written policies
- Performance management system for driver accountability and recognition
- Program performance measures that include goals and objectives for continuously improving
- Communications to leadership and drivers
- Safe Vehicle selection, maintenance and inspection
We started to apply this standard in December 2009 in countries with large and medium-size fleets. We are on target to roll out the standard to the entire global fleet by the end of 2011.
In 2010, we are launching a new resource that builds on industry best practices and provides an extensive management system to help focus safety priorities.
